Katie Lippincott

Hi! :D My name is Katie Lippincott, I’m 20 years old, and I like to draw! I was initially inspired by my love of anime, and a lot of my early work reflects that…a little too much. Since I started taking my drawings more seriously I have grown in leaps and bounds and developed my own style along the way.

Internet-wise, I started off on deviantART (http://serenity-winner.deviantart.com, though I have since removed my gallery). Now I post my finished pieces on Storm Artists (http://serenity-fails.storm-artists.net/) and my sketches on LiveJournal (http://alpha-crucis.livejournal.com). I mostly do digital work, though I’ve been experimenting with ink and watercolor recently.

Mizuhi is a whole story in and of herself. Long story short: I used to write terrible self-insert Mary-Sue X-Men: Evolution fanfiction. – 2004

A lot of my improvement has been my trying to force myself to stop relying on “anime-style” shortcuts and cliches. I’d never had any formal training, so my first time in a serious college-level art class was like a slap in the face. I basically had to un-learn most of what I did. I believe now that there is a right and a wrong way to use anime-inspired techniques, and that one can’t expect to make good work without first studying anatomy, proportion, perspective, etc… Your basic framework has to come first. I still have a really long way to go but seeing how far I’ve come since I started helps me see that I am actually learning.

It also helps if you draw as much as possible! You learn something with every picture, so the more you draw the faster you’ll improve. Even if you hate everything you’re making (and frequently I do).

    Katie,

I have not seen your work lately. Wow. It was great before, but now it is incredible. It is clearer, with a better use of line and perspective. I really enjoyed seeing your work again.

The preview image of the androgynous blonde caught my eye immediately.

The style is unique and bright, and the traditional medium of watercolor and ink is working very well for you. I think you should continue more in that direction, as it emphasizes your keen eye for fluid linework and brings a nice palette of colors for you to work with.

I’m excited to see what you do next, cheers.

When I saw this post, your style seemed somehow familiar. Then, when I checked your LJ, I saw you post to Watchdom! :D
