Kaitlin Mari Baudier, aka Mari, sent in some great samples from her evolution across a couple of different mediums. We’re proud to feature her comics and ceramics here!

I’m an artist from New Orleans, Louisiana and have been writing and illustrating web-comics since 2003 when I began my first online comic, Communication Confusion. Last year I was in the top 50 of the Comic book challenge with my new series Shizentai. I took a handful of art classes in my life (at New Orleans Center for Creative arts as well as Kansai Gaidai in Japan), but I got my degree in biology and am currently working in research, with the occasional published insect illustration here and there.

It’s hard being a kid that is terrible at something you love. To add to your own frustrations there are constantly people around that don’t even make art but who are ready to give you their expert chastisements for breaking rules and equations for what they consider to be good. Like any kid, I tried my best to follow directions. I attempted to mimic other artists’ styles and tried very hard to make everything about my art by-the-book and correct to other people’s conceptions. As you can see, it just came out awful, even worse than uninteresting. That’s why I was really surprised to find that the day I ignored everything I was taught and focused on observing live subject matter was the day other people started asking me for advice. The change was in a matter of months, and there is no secret method about it. I just have to systematically go though every element of my art and ask myself “Is there a reason I did this?” If my answer is “yes” I leave it, but if my answer is “I don’t know” I change it.

  1. I love your style. I really like how no two of your pieces are similiar; you really have come into your own.

And your koi pot? I’d seriously drop money on something like that if I ever came across it in a store - simply beautiful. :)

  2. Compared to the other 3 artist I saw on here who were very anime/cartoon influenced, this is the only one Ive seen where I really feel hes come into his own! His comic compositions are really interesting and unusual, and completely fitting to the atmosphere of the narratives. And it seems to me that artistically he is not trying to change his ’style’ from one thing to the next, hes just doing whats nessasary to express what needs to be expressed! I like that! =3
I totally agree with what he said at the bottom, wise words and good advice if your an artist!

I’ve been following Shizentai for a long time now and I can’t wait to see the rest of the story. I really enjoy your unique style and you’ve become one of the heroes I follow in the world of art/comics. ^_^

    Keep up the good work!

That you very much sharing this with us!
It was very inspirational. I myself will be turning 17 soon, and am quite frustrated with how things are going in my artistic endeavors. Knowing that in such an amazing change can be made in only a few years is quite the confidence booster!

    Thank you!
